Wanita Umno wants DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang to come clean on whether he will push for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into fresh claims that the country suffered forex losses amounting to billions of ringgit in the 1990s.
The wing’s chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil (pic) questioned why Lim was being silent now, as he had been very vocal in calling for an RCI when the issue first surfaced.
“Is Lim Kit Siang afraid that if he insists on setting up an RCI for the forex issue, his personal political ambition to become Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister will be threatened?” Shahrizat said in a statement yesterday.
She was commenting on the recent revelation by former Bank Negara assistant governor Datuk Abdul Murad Khalid that the nation had suffered losses in excess of US$10bil at the time as a result of speculation in the forex market.
In an interview with a local English daily, he had questioned why the forex losses which allegedly happened when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was prime minister, was not investigated at length.
Lim was one of the Opposition figures who had highlighted the issue at the time, and had previously called for an RCI to investigate the actual amount of losses suffered, which was purportedly higher than US$10bil.
